Diabetic Shoes are now available at Dowd Drug

Did you know that Medicare will pay for 80% of one pair of diabetic shoes and 3 pairs of inserts per year?  Since May of 1993, when Medicare passed the Therapeutic Shoe Bill, patients have been able to obtain diabetic shoes if they meet certain criteria.  Those who have Medicare and are diabetic should contact their doctor about getting a prescription for diabetic shoes.

Why should diabetics wear special diabetic shoes?

There are many complications associated with diabetes.  Two such complications include poor circulation and neuropathy.  In patients with poor circulation, wounds to the feet may not heal as quickly and lead to ulcers or more serious infections.  Neuropathy can cause patients not to feel their feet as well as they used to therefore, allowing minor injuries to go unnoticed.  It can also cause deformities such as bunions and hammer toes.

How are diabetic shoes different from regular shoes?

Diabetic shoes are designed with diabetics in mind.  They have a seamless construction for reducation in abrasion, a reinforced toe, velcro or tie closure and are more breathable than other shoes.

If you have any questions about diabetic shoes feel free to call, stop in or e-mail Julie at julie@dowddrug.com.
